Unravelling the Past

Constructed between 1593 and 1597, the Rushton Triangular Lodge was commissioned by Sir Thomas Tresham, a devout Roman Catholic nobleman during the turbulent Elizabethan era. Tresham’s Catholic faith was deeply ingrained in his identity, and he sought to express his religious convictions through architecture.

Symbolism in Architecture

The most striking feature of the Rushton Triangular Lodge is its unique triangular shape, which was laden with symbolic meaning. Each side of the lodge represents one of the Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – a reflection of Tresham’s unwavering devotion to his faith. The number three is intricately woven throughout the lodge’s design, from the three triangular gables adorned with Latin inscriptions to the three floors within.

Architectural Details

Constructed of alternating bands of limestone and ironstone, the lodge boasts intricate detailing and craftsmanship. The exterior is adorned with decorative friezes, carvings of biblical scenes, and Latin inscriptions, alluding to Tresham’s religious fervour and his allegiance to the Catholic Church.

Despite enduring centuries of wear and tear, the Rushton Triangular Lodge has been remarkably well-preserved.
